One of the most important things to do before leaving home for a holiday is to prepare your home so that things run smoothly whilst you are away. There are things you can do before you jet off to ensure optimum comfort for your cat and to ensure your cat sitter is fully equipped with all they need to deliver the best care for your cat in your absence.
Check Your Contact Information is Correct
The first thing to do is to double-check check your pet sitter has your contact details, including your email address, in case of emergencies and to send you pictures and updates on your furry friend.
You might also consider notifying your neighbours that you have hired a cat sitter, so they are not alarmed if they see a stranger letting themselves into your home. Another person to notify is your vet - let them know you are having someone care for your cat and authorise the vet to provide medical care in your absence, if necessary.
Before you head off, it's also a good time to confirm the information on your cat’s microchip is correct and up to date, along with the tag on their collar. You can leave a list of emergency numbers, such as your vet, neighbour or family, in an obvious place for your sitter so they have them at hand in case of an emergency.
Heating and Perimeters
As your cat will be safe and secure in your home, you will need to adjust the heating to a comfortable temperature whilst you are away since they can’t do this themselves! If you're heading away in the Winter months, consider leaving instructions for your cat sitter on how to change the thermostat in case of a sudden drop in temperature.
If there are areas that Kitty is not allowed, make sure to close the doors and block off access to these places, and let your sitter know which areas are off-limits. Before you set off, ensure you lock all windows and doors, including any patio and garage doors.
Be sure to keep your home to a comfortable temperature for your cat
Cat Supplies
Preparation is key when going on a trip away - the last thing you want to do before you leave is to run to the shops to stock up on cat supplies!
So double-check that there will be enough food and litter whilst you are away and medication if needed. Leave all supplies in a clear place, so your cat sitter doesn’t need to hunt around and spend valuable kitty care time to find them.
Leave out cleaning products so your sitter can easily clear up any spills or messes, and leave your cat’s litter tray clean and fresh. If your cat eats a raw food diet, it may help to keep your cat’s meals in separate servings in the fridge for your sitter to grab and feed.
Cat Safety
Double-check in each room your cat will have access to and put away or remove anything that can harm them. Things like plants, perfumes and tiny objects are all things that could be toxic to a kitty or a possible choking hazard. We all know cats love a little mischief, especially when bored or left alone for periods, so check that there are no breakable items in their reach during this time.
See to it that all toilet seats are down, cupboards and closet doors are shut, and all chemicals and medications are securely away. Make sure to leave a note of any medication instructions for your cat sitter on how and when to administer whilst you are away, and advise where the medication is stored.
Stress Relief for Your Cat
To ensure your cat’s happiness and to minimise stress, leave something with them with your smell; wear a jumper for a few days before you go and put it in their bed, your scent will be reassurance for them whilst you are away.
Does your cat enjoy having the television or the radio on? If so, this may also help when they are on their own so they don't feel alone. Your cat may also appreciate a new toy to stave off boredom - make sure their toys are easily accessible to them.
Keep your house the way it always is - don’t make any room or furniture changes before you leave so your cat feels as relaxed as possible. Ensure your cat has access to all their hiding places and rooms they usually go to before you leave.
While you may not be there to keep your cat company, there's plenty you can do around the home to make sure they're safe and comfortable while you're away
Helpful Hints for Your Cat Sitter
You will, of course, have already discussed a care guide with your cat sitter, but leaving helpful reminders will be greatly appreciated to ensure your cat receives the best care. Be sure to leave a list of your cat's hiding places too, as your sitter will want to check in on them if they are elusive!
If you have agreed to have your plants watered, simple instructions on how to do so will be useful, as not all cat sitters are avid gardeners! A note of bin day will also be helpful if you have arranged for your sitter to sort the rubbish collections.
Leave instructions on where to find Kitty’s treats and how often they are allowed them - this will avoid any unnecessary stomach upsets. A sticky note on doors that are a bit stiff or don’t close properly or should remain shut or open at all times is useful; Any top tips you have for getting your cat to eat their meals or take their medication - if it involves luncheon meat make sure to have some in the fridge!
Now all you have to do is have a stress-free time away and look forward to your updates on your furry friend!
