Being a Cat Butler Franchisee not only allows you to work with cats all day - you are also running your own cat sitting business, engaging with the clients (human and furry!) and building relationships. Customer service is king when you're a cat sitter, and being the best in class at looking after lots and lots of cats goes without saying.

Having worked in retail for so many years, giving outstanding service and understanding what your clients need is imperative. But there is one aspect to being a Cat Butler that for me is essential and one that I really love, and this is understanding the psychology and behaviour of the cats I look after.

Cat Butler Jane and her customer Biggles

All our cats are different and have varying personalities, behaviours and temperaments. When we look after cats, we like to understand their likes and dislikes and quirky behaviours. Respecting the cat/cat's boundaries is very important and helps to build a trusting relationship between The Cat Butler and the cats we serve.

Some cats are incredibly independent and just want to be fed and left alone - that's also ok. On our visits, we take time to first see how our feline customers will respond. Cats are very territorial, and any stranger entering their space must respect that. Some don't like eye contact and prefer to keep their distance; others love brushes and strokes and feel immediately comfortable with strangers. Playtime is always a great bonding mechanism and giving treats.

But nothing is more satisfying than completing a cat sitting assignment with a happy and content cat customer whatever their needs are.
